Kathryn Barrett-Gaines (Lenya) has done Carnival, On the Town, A Recreation of the Creation, Li’l Abner, Dark of the Moon, Godspell, Muscular Metallic Meat-eater Review and Medicinal Masquerade, Hello Dolly, Women of Brewster Place, The Two, Andre’s Mother, Puttin’ On The Hits, Children of Eden, The Mousetrap, The Nerd, and A Christmas Carol, 1933. She has been inside many costumes, as her college mascot the Fordham Ram; crash-test dummy for the state of Maryland; and Snapdragon, Maryland’s seatbelt mascot. She has done comedy at Harlem’s Apollo Theater and other clubs. In Uganda, she is a TV, radio, stage, film, and recording artist, as well as author and columnist, under her stage name Omwana w’Omuzungu. For many years she toured Uganda performing with one of Uganda’s most popular entertainers, Paul Kafeero, singing and being funny in Luganda language on stage, TV, and radio. She directs African American Studies at University of Maryland Eastern Shore and is a professor of African and other kinds of History. She hosts a radio show on the Eastern Shore, where she has at least one listener that she is sure of.
